What to do besides calling the dentist?

Toothache: Dissolve one teaspoon of salt in a glass of water and rinse your mouth with it. A cold compress on the affected area also helps.
Knocked out tooth: Pick up the tooth by the crown, wash it gently and place it in a glass of milk. Rush to your dentist for a higher chance of restoring it.
Broken or chipped tooth: Save pieces in a container. Rinse your mouth with a warm salt-water solution. Bleeding gums: Apply a clean piece of gauze to the source until the bleeding stops.
Lodged objects between teeth: Try to gently prick it using a string of dental floss. Lost crown or filling: Put sugarless gum on the affected tooth while on your way to the dentist.
Broken braces: Carefully cut the protruding wire and apply orthodontic wax or an eraser on the pointed piece. Infection: Rinse with warm water with salt in it for temporary pain relief. Head on to your dentist for immediate treatment.

What if there’s an infection in your tooth?

If you have severe pain in your tooth, it’s probably an abscess or root canal infection.

An abscess is evident with pus in the gums and will not go away on its own. Your dentist will need to drain the pus to relieve your discomfort and treat it for good. Symptoms of root canal infection are serious pain or sensitivity when you eat or drink cold and hot foods. Your dentist will make a hole on top of the tooth to remove the infection that is deep inside the tooth root.
