Are dental braces right for you?
Are you having problems with teeth spacing, crookedness, or misalignment? Well, it’s time to see your orthodontist and ask about dental braces. These are appliances with brackets and wires attached to the teeth to fix your dental problems.
Most often, orthodontists recommend dental braces treatment to their patients at an early age of 10 to 14 years old, as long as all permanent teeth already emerged. During these early teenage years, the patient’s mouth is still developing and his teeth are more favorable to straightening. In addition, adults who are in their 20’s to 30’s are also good candidates for dental braces.
Types of Dental Braces

Ceramic braces
These are good alternatives to the metal braces since they function the same way. They only differ from the materials since these are made from tooth-colored ceramic brackets. The ceramic braces are nearly invisible because of the transparent materials used for the brackets. To complement the look, you may choose silver, frost or white for the archwires to make your orthodontic treatment less noticeable. Compared to Invisalign, ceramic braces move teeth faster which shortens the treatment period.

Lingual braces
These are the same metal braces which are attached at the back of the patient’s teeth. This treatment is ideal for those who want straighter teeth without the need to show off their braces. Most patients who work in the media or music industry choose lingual braces. The only drawback is that patients will have to exert more effort in cleaning their teeth throughout the treatment period.

Self-ligating braces
This is another type of metal braces in which the patients will have less dental visits during their treatment. That’s because self-ligating braces use a different sliding mechanism to link the archwires. This type of braces causes gradual yet constant movement. In effect, there’s less friction when the teeth adjust and it causes less pain. Moreover, you’re able to save time and resources since you don’t have to visit your orthodontist more often.
Procedure for Dental Braces Treatment
Day 1
Initial Orthodontic Consultation
Your visit to the clinic involves an initial discussion of your dental problems with an orthodontist. He will examine your teeth and the position of your jaw as he takes digital X-ray images of your mouth. Based on the result, he will explain if your oral problem merits an orthodontic treatment. Then, he will discuss what type of braces suits you, the duration of the treatment, cost, and payment options they offer in the clinic. As soon as you agree to the treatment plan, your braces may be placed on the same day, or another visit will be scheduled in the next three days.
Day 4
Placing Dental Braces
Your teeth are cleaned, polished, and air-dried so the brackets adhere to them with the use of dental cement. Your orthodontist uses a cheek retractor to make sure your teeth stay dry during the procedure. There’s no need for local anesthesia since the procedure is painless.
Each bracket is applied with dental cement and is placed on every tooth according to the treatment plan. Any excess amount of dental cement is removed before the dentist uses laser light to strengthen the bond. After the brackets are placed, he removes the cheek retractor, put dental archwires and ligatures in place. These will put pressure on your gums which cause the teeth to move according to the designed orthodontic treatment
6th Week
Dental Braces Adjustment
Your orthodontist will schedule your regular visits for the periodic adjustments of your braces every six to eight weeks. He changes the ligatures as these rubberized rings wear out. When ligatures are worn out, they no longer apply pressure on your gums which might delay the progress of your treatment. It’s strongly recommended that you commit to your regular visits to avoid that from happening.
24th Month
Removal of Braces
After a certain period, your orthodontist will assess the progress of your treatment by taking another digital X-ray of your mouth. Once the teeth and jaw are well-aligned, teeth gaps are closed off, it’s time to remove the dental braces. Each tooth is well cleaned after the ligatures, archwires, brackets and remaining dental cement are removed. Then, he will take another digital impression of your teeth that will be used as the basis for your retainers. In most cases, patients need to wear their dental braces for 18 to 24 months. However, some patients’ teeth move into the desired position in a shorter period, while others take longer than 24 months.
12 Month
Wearing of Retainers
After you have completed your 24-month orthodontic treatment, your dentist will take another digital impression of your aligned teeth. The impressions will be used in making your dental retainers to maintain your teeth alignment and avoid orthodontic relapse. Once your teeth are free from wires and brackets, they tend to go back to their original position. Wearing of retainers after the removal of braces might be extended to several months up to years depending on how well you respond to the treatment.
Cost of dental braces
The cost for the dental braces treatment ranges from $4,000 to $13,500. If you already have a dental insurance provider, check the coverage of your plan on what percentage they would cover for your orthodontic treatment. If this is not included yet, you may purchase a supplemental plan and confirm the percentage of their coverage for dental braces. In most cases, insurance providers cover up to 50% of the dental bill. Just make sure that you continue your dental plan until the treatment is complete.
At Downtown Dentistry, we also offer affordable payment plans so you can start your orthodontic treatment in no time. Your smile is important to us, and we don’t want you to miss out in life.
